Technically, you can play bluegrass banjo on any 5 string banjo, but to get the projection and bright tone that bluegrass banjo players are really after you will want to use a resonator banjo.

The resonator is the back of the banjo and it reflects the sound out towards your listeners. It helps give your banjo more projection so that when you take a solo, you can cut through the rest of the band.
